Chiropractors have the skills and expertise to recognize cognitive impairments and screen for concussion-like symptoms. In addition, chiropractors can treat the other issues that are usually associated with concussion injuries, such as: whiplash, neck strains, headaches, and muscle spasms. Chiropractors can play an integral role within the patient’s health team to not only reduce their symptoms but for the betterment of their life.
Is a simple outcome measure (usually used in sport) that chiropractors or coaches/trainers can use to test their athletes orientation, concentration, memory, balance and co-ordination tasks. SCAT-2 are also used for baseline concussion screens to account for the patient/athlete variability.
Removal From Sport and Avoid Strenuous Exercise
If you suspect a concussion, they should be removed from the sport that day. EVEN WITHOUT SYMPTOMS! Reason DELAY OF SYMPTOMS. Relating back to last weeks topic, energy metabolism has shown to significantly decrease 1-2 hours after the injury. And maximum energy depletion is seen 6 HOURS AFTER the injury.
Initial stages of concussion management
ABSOLUTE physical and cognitive rest for 24 hours. REFRAINING FROM: reading, watching TV, and going to school/work.
Manual therapy is one of the greatest tools chiropractors can offer to their concussion patients.
