Do You Have High Blood Pressure?
What is High Blood Pressure? Blood pressure is a measure of the force of blood pushing against the walls of arteries (blood vessels). Each time the heart beats, it pumps blood through blood vessels, supplying the body's muscles, organs and tissues with the oxygen and nutrients that they need to function. Over the course of a day, an individual's blood pressure rises and falls many times in response to various stimuli. Elevated blood pressure over a sustained period of time is a condition referred to as hypertension.
Hypertension is called the “silent killer” because an individual can have it for many years without realizing it. Hypertension rarely causes symptoms and is a risk factor for many other conditions including kidney disease and coronary heart disease, which may lead to heart attack and/or stroke.
What causes it? There are many factors and these include: pregnancy, sleep apnea, medication, alcohol use, aortic coarctation (the narrowing of the aorta).
What are my treatment options? Treating high blood pressure can help prevent serious and life-threatening complications. A doctor may also suggest steps to control conditions that can contribute to high blood pressure, such as high cholesterol and diabetes. Blood pressure goals are not the same for everyone so it is best to consult your healthcare provider for further information on how to treat your High Blood Pressure.
Conventional approaches: Blood pressure lowering medication is the most common conventional approach to lowering blood pressure.
Natural alternative or complimentary options: Natural approaches to lowering blood pressure include lifestyle changes (weight loss and exercise) and stress management if needed, dietary changes, and if needed, blood pressure lowering natural medicines (e.g. vitamins, minerals and herbal remedies). At times hormone testing is helpful to assess if the cause is stress related or possibly (peri) menopause-related.
The Naturopathic Doctors and the Holistic Nutritionist at Kleinburg Integrative Health can assess you to determine whether or not you need to make nutritional changes to your diet and help you to loose weight if needed. If stress management is required, psychology, psychotherapy or massage therapy may be helpful for you as well. Click on any of the above links to read more.
