Infertility is defined as not being able to conceive after at least one year of trying. Fertility conditions may affect both men and women.
What can effect your ability to conceive? Many factors may contribute to male and female infertility, including genetic disorders or health conditions. In some cases smoking, stress, caffeine intake and lifestyle choices may affect fertility for both men and women.
What are my treatment options? Individuals affected by fertility conditions may be treated with medications and various medical technologies. It is best to contact your health care provider to go over treatment at is best suited for you.
Conventional approaches typically includes a visit to a fertility clinic. Here you will have a full work up of your hormone levels and at times certain diagnostic imaging tests. A treatment course will be decided on that typically includes hormones (oral and/or injection), frequent ultrasound tests and possibly IUI (intrauterine insemination) or IVF (invitro fertilization) procedures.

Natural treatments can either be used in conjuction with conventional methods or on their own.
Research supports the use of acupuncture in patients undergoing IVF (1,2) and those looking to improve fertility in general. Acupuncture is based on the theory that vital energy flows through the body along certain pathways. Acupuncture treatments help to balance this energy and restore health by stimulating specific points along the pathways with thin needles.
Proper nutrition is also an important element in the treatment of infertility. Both the Holistic Nutritionist and Naturopathic Doctors at Kleinburg Integrative Health can work with you to improve your diet and get on the right path to better hormonal and reproductive health.
At KIH we have a fertility support program designed specifically to optimize your fertility levels naturally. Read more here: Fortify Your Fertility Health Program
This may include salivary hormone testing, which can help identify your hormonal state (both female and male if indicated). Testing hormones through the saliva provides different information then that obtained via the blood because it identifies how much of the hormones are being used vs. measuring just the quantity of hormone present in the blood at that moment. The naturopathic doctors at KIH clinic may choose to order a salivary panel for you, and if these hormone levels are not within the recommended reference ranges then herbal remedies, bioidentical hormones and/or vitamin-mineral supplements may be recommended to re-establish a proper balance.
